NaCl
The Schweizerhalle is an industrial area in the southeast of Basel. The starting point for the chemical industry was laid by the Schweizer Salinen, a factory supplying Switzerland’s whole demand for salt. Until today, the resource salt is used by the industry and physically connects the area. Recently, a political vote to prohibit the salt extraction has passed and now the Saline is confronted with the uncertainty, whether the remaining drilling fields will be able to serve the large infrastructure in the Schweizer Saline. The integration of two new functions along the lines of the salt production balance this uncertainty, while using the resource: The Sanatorium benefits from the excess heat of the salt production and uses the salty water and air to its advantage. The School of Chemistry provides the necessary infrastructure and space for chemical laboratories, while turning into the only property, where a new drilling field can be established. It forms a space for the exchange between theory and practice, while providing products for both the chemical industry and the sanatorium.
